Iowa's History

Iowa became a state on December 28th,1846. At first the Native Americans lived hear until President James K. Polk signed a bill makeing Iowa a state. During the Civil War, Iowa was part of the Union. About 76,534 men ,from Iowa, joined and 13,169 of them had died fighting. Some sodiers didn't return home for unknown reasons (including my great great great grandpa).

When World War 1 started, Iowa had more then 1,000,000 people liveing in the state. Most of these people where small farmers. But during the war Iowa ,alone with the econmy, went through change with money. After World War 2 Iowas farming went up and was doing well. That was true until 1980 when the Farm Crisis hit the state. The population had suffered becaues of the crisis and lasted for a decade.

Today Iowa's population has shot up faster then the U.S. alone. The state has became less agricultrual and more manufactural over time. People are still farmers but more are in the insurance service.
